Going to University

This is what Rachel wrote on her University application form: "I realise that I need to go on to higher education to further my knowledge and extend my experience in order to secure a rewarding and satisfying occupation. I have always known I would like to work with people and after examining the options available, I decided that Occupational Therapy would provide me with the stimulation and challenge I need in an occupation. I have a lively interest in other people and have taken the opportunity over the past two years to work with a number of pupils lower down in the school. Upon my entry into the sixth form I was given the opportunity to help a child with reading difficulties and spent the next two months working on a one to one basis with him to improve his skills. I also made weekly visits to the local junior school where I provided support for the children in all subject areas, which I have continued to do throughout my time in the sixth form. Following on from this I have recently started working with a small group of children, within a year 7 maths class, who have learning difficulties. This year I was elected Vice-Chairperson of the 6th Form Committee and have assisted with the organisation of various activities, including a sponsored 'Circuit for Somalia', in which I took part, at Brinsford Prison, outside of school. I combined my desire to aid others with my ambition to complete a parachute jump, the proceeds of which went to Mencap. In my free time I enjoy cooking, reading, sewing and all types of music. Over the past few years I have developed an interest in West-End shows and have recently seen Buddy, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. I played the violin for several years attaining my Grade 3 in this subject and also have a number of gymnastics awards. I am currently enjoying the aerobics class I attend weekly. I have a part-time job at Kwik Save which brings me into contact with members of the public, as does my temporary work as a receptionist at a local doctor's surgery. I also completed work experience in the Occupational Therapy Departments of St. Matthew's and St. Michael's Hospitals. I found the patients very interesting and the work extremely worthwhile and rewarding. I would therefore like to continue with Occupational Therapy by undertaking further studies to enable me to obtain the necessary qualifications for State Registration.
